Air conditioner basics

The first step in getting a new air conditioner installed is determining what size you need. You don't want one without sufficient power to cool your home, and getting an air conditioner that's too big can be more expensive and less comfortable.

Useful Terms:

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) is a measurement of the cooling efficiency of the air conditioner over the entire cooling season.

A ton is a measure of cooling capacity. It is equivalent to 3.5 kW or 12 000 Btu/h.

An air conditioner’s evaporator coil is the part of the system where the refrigerant absorbs heat. That is, it’s where the cold air comes from and is typically located in the duct work just above the furnace.

A system with an outdoor (condenser) unit attached to an indoor (evaporator) coil by means of soft copper tubing. Like your furnace, your central AC is reliant on the ductwork that connects to each individual room/space to ensure proper cooling.

Mini-splits are heating and cooling systems that allow you to control the temperatures in individual rooms or spaces.
