Hot water tanks take in large amounts of cold water to heat and store for when you want it. There are 4 types of hot water tanks most commonly found in todays’ homes. Visually they may look similar but the mechanical differences can set them worlds apart.

Conventional

  • Capacity: 40-60 US Gallons
  • Cheapest cost of purchase and installation
  • Least efficient
  • Lowest recovery rate
  • Distinguishable by its draft collar and metal venting
  • Typically vented through the chimney or vent stack
  • Does not require standard electrical source therefore will run during a power outage

Power Vent

  • Capacity: 40-75 US Gallons
  • Mid range cost to purchase and install
  • More efficient than Conventional (CV)
  • Slightly better recovery rate than Conventional
  • Distinguishable by its ventor motor and 2″ or 3″ venting pipe
  • Typical exhaust termination on the side of the house
  • Requires 115V power supply

Direct Vent

  • Capacity: 40-75 US Gallons
  • Expensive to purchase and install
  • More efficient than Power Vent (PV)
  • Similar recovery rate to Power Vent
  • Distinguishable by its two pipe intake and venting system
  • Sealed combustion chamber
  • Does not use air from inside the home for venting or combustion
  • Requires 115V electrical supply

High Efficiency

  • Capacity: 50 & 75 US Gallons
  • Most expensive to purchase and install
  • Very efficient
  • Super high recovery rate
  • Available in Power Vent and Direct Vent configurations
  • Sealed combustion chamber
  • Requires 115V electrical supply
